I have recently purchased a Tata Punch and am very satisfied with the car. Previously, I owned a Dzire and a Honda Civic. Now, I am planning to buy a German car, and my budget will be around ₹50 lakh (on EMI). I am confused about which one to go for. Since this budget puts me close to the premium car market in India, I have shortlisted brands like the Jeep Meridian, VW Tayron, Fortuner, etc. My priorities are good mileage (expecting at least 15 kmpl), top-notch performance, luxury seating and comfort, and decent looks. The powertrain would be petrol manual only. Please suggest a suitable choice.

Unfortunately, none of the cars here meet your requirement of a minimum mileage of 15 kpl, and none of them offer a manual transmission with their petrol engines. In fact, the Jeep Meridian is a diesel-only SUV and does not come with a petrol engine option.
If you are flexible on mileage and don’t mind going for an automatic, we would recommend the newly launched Volkswagen Tayron. It is the best of the lot: the most engaging to drive, with a fantastic cabin, and powered by a strong and smooth 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine.
The R-Line variant of the Tayron will be well above your budget, but the standard trim, expected to arrive in April, should be closer to your ₹50 lakh budget.

Hi everyone, I am planning to buy my first car for my family and am specifically looking for an automatic transmission. After visiting multiple showrooms, I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5, Skoda Kylaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. My budget is ₹15 lakh, which can be extended up to ₹17 lakh. My daily usage will mainly be within the city, averaging around 30-40 km. I have also heard that the Volkswagen Tera is expected to launch in India this year. Should I wait for the Tera or go ahead with one of my shortlisted options? Please help me decide, as I am quite confused.

According to Autocar India's exclusive, Volkswagen's sub-4-meter SUV is expected only in 2027. This year, VW will launch the facelifted Taigun. Skoda has already unveiled the updated Kushaq, and VW will follow soon.

And if you don't want to wait longer, you can consider the Skoda Kylaq. It comes with a fresh look, an updated cabin, improved AC performance and an 8-speed AT paired with the 1 litre Turbo, for a smoother drive and better efficiency.

Hi There, I am planning to buy VW Tayron R-line which is about to be launched. Though my driving is not much, ~1000KM/month, I liked that SUV which seems to be more VFM over Kodiak or X1. My only concern is about VW DSG gearbox. I have read and watched many news which talks about the unreliability of DCT gearbox, how it tends to heat and prone to quick wear and tear than torque conv or CVT. I need your kind advice before I make a decision. Thanks in advance. Cheers!

The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is shaping up to be an interesting SUV. It is nicely loaded with features - more so than the imported Tiguan R-Line - and features sporty looks and a powerful engine. As for the DSG gearbox, yes, dual-clutch gearboxes have been known to experience greater wear than torque-converters or CVTs, but that is only if they're not handled with care, and mostly in stop-and-go conditions.

Best practices like shifting out of D at a standstill, rolling off smoothly will greatly prolong the life of the gearbox, and of course not skimping on recommended maintenance. Moreover, these issues were more prominent in older iterations of the DSG used on smaller cars, like the Polo's DQ200, things have been greatly improved in newer iterations and on larger cars with more powerful engines; the Tayron uses a newer DQ381-7A.

As for VFM, we do not know the price as yet, though the hope is that local assembly will at least make it competitive. However, later this year, Volkswagen will launch a standard version of the Tayron, without the R-Line specification, that will miss the body kit and some features, and that could be the one to pick.

Hi, I am planning to buy a petrol manual car with a budget of Rs 18 lakh. My dream car from my graduation is the Mahindra Thar or ROXX. But as I am married now, I am also thinking of the Skoda Kushaq or Volkswagen Taigun. Kindly please suggest to me whether I should go with the Thar or others. And one major thing is that the majority of the drive will be on hill roads and bad roads. So please suggest to me accordingly. Thank you.

If most of your driving is on hill roads and bad roads, the Mahindra Thar ROXX makes more sense. It offers higher ground clearance, a tougher suspension setup and far more confidence on broken terrain. Compared to the three-door Thar, the ROXX is also more comfortable and practical, with better rear seat space and a usable boot.
That said, the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are more comfortable, practical and efficient for everyday use. They can handle mild rough roads with ease, but are not meant for sustained bad terrain. Both are also due for updates with improved comfort and added features, so it makes sense to wait a month or two if you are leaning towards either of them.

So, I have two options shortlisted in my list. One is a well-maintained 2022 Jeep Meridian Limited (O) for ₹22 lakh. It has a clean service and insurance history. The other is considering a new car. I’m someone who values driving pleasure more than outright practicality. What would you suggest for someone who’s going to driving 60% city & 40% highway?

The Jeep Meridian's build, quality and ride-handling balance are excellent, and the price at which you're getting a well-maintained used example seems fair. Do keep in mind that the Meridian's diesel engine isn't very refined, and it can feel a bit sluggish within urban confines.
Alternatively, you could consider the 2.0 TSI versions of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq, which are great driving cars. Their petrol version delivers strong and smooth performance, something that you are likely to appreciate. Both of these cars are available with a very competent 2.0 diesel engine, although these will be 5-year-old or older examples.
If you want a new SUV, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a great option. And, in case you're open to electric cars, the Mahindra XEV 9e is one you will enjoy driving.

I have a budget of ₹50 lakh on-road and need a comfortable 7-seater car. Which one should I buy?

There aren't many choices in the Rs 50 lakh range for seven-seater cars, but there are a few options to consider. If the third-row space is not critical and will only be used occasionally for short trips, the best seven-seater for your budget is the Skoda Kodiaq. It drives exceptionally well, thanks to a smooth and strong turbocharged petrol engine, as well as good handling.

The cabin is well-equipped and feels pretty premium, too. You could also consider the Volkswagen Tayron. It will be launched next month and is in the same league as the Kodiaq, though the price has not been announced yet.

If third row comfort and all-around space are your priority, then Innova Hycross hybrid is your best option. But, it is a step down from the Kodiaq, and Tayron. Being a hybrid, you will find it exceptionally smooth, especially when it runs in full electric mode.

I am planning to buy an automatic car with a budget of up to ₹20 lakh (maximum). My priorities are automatic engine, safety and comfort. I am confused between the new-generation Kia Seltos and the Honda Elevate. Should I wait for the upcoming Taigun and Elevate facelifts?

The Kia Seltos is a very good all-rounder, and the new-generation car has had focused improvements in ride quality and rear seat space, so this should meet your requirements for a comfortable car. Safety equipment is good, with features like six airbags and ESC standard across the range. The car has not been crash tested by GNCAP or BNCAP yet.
The Volkswagen Taigun has secured a 5-star GNCAP rating, and the facelift should secure the same too. However, in terms of comfort, it would rank behind the Seltos and will take a few months to arrive, with the Honda Elevate being later still. Thus, on the whole, we think the Kia Seltos is a good buy that you can happily go ahead with.

I am confused between the Hyundai Verna SX Plus IVT and the Volkswagen Virtus 1.0 Topline automatic. Please help.

In a nutshell, the Hyundai Verna IVT makes for a friendlier city car, while the Volkswagen Virtus AT is the more exciting car to drive.
The Verna has a smoother gearbox, which works very well with the engine at typical city speeds. It works well as a highway car too, so long as easygoing driving is your style. The Verna also packs in more features for less money.
The Volkswagen Virtus has a punchier engine and feels more enthusiastic to drive. Its 6-speed gearbox is also sporty in its shifts. However, the engine-gearbox does have a tendency to lurch forward at crawling speeds, and this is something you have to be mindful of.
Do note, the Virtus 1.0 is due to get a new 8-speed automatic gearbox later this year and could be worth waiting for. The model will also see feature additions.

Which seating position gives more comfort for long drives - low seat height cars like the Glanza or sedans, SUV seating like the Taigun and Grand Vitara, or MPVs like the Innova?

Broadly speaking, the higher you sit in a car, the more comfortable you are, which is why SUVs and MPVs are more comfortable over long drives. But it's not just the height of the car but lots of other factors like the ‘H-Point’ (the distance between your hip and the floor) under thigh support, the seat cushioning and finally the driving position which impacts comfort on a long drive.

I own the Virtus 1.5 GT. My question relates to driving the car for short distances. I’ve heard that diesel engine cars need to be driven on an open road occasionally to clean up the DPF filter. Do I need to do something similar for my turbo-petrol car, or is it okay to drive it in city traffic at slow speeds for extended periods?

Petrol cars don’t have a DPF filter, which, as the name suggests, diesel particulate filter- only applies to diesel cars. Your turbo petrol doesn’t have any such issues to worry about.
What you can do to keep your Volkswagen Virtus engine in top shape is to warm the engine properly on a regular basis. The trouble with very short trips is that the engine doesn’t warm up, which can lead to moisture and small amounts of unburnt fuel accumulating in the oil over time, which isn’t ideal for long-term engine health.
But a 20-30 minute run is enough for the engine to reach full operating temperature, which will keep everything running fine. Also, if you stick to your oil change schedule, with the correct VW-spec oil and decent fuel, your engine can last a lifetime.
