Toyota Etios Cross

With its body cladding and other addenda, the Cross sure looks different to the standard Etios Liva. Whether the visual effect is worth the added money over the Liva is a call for the customer to take. Like the Liva, the Cross’ cabin has also been spruced-up over the years but it’s still not what you’d call rich. Comfortable seats and ample rear-seat space continue to be the Cross’ strengths.
The Cross’ 1.2-litre petrol mill is fine for city use but it’s the more powerful, more responsive and peppier 1.5-litre petrol engine that you should be more interested in. Diesel buyers don’t have it quite as nice with the sole option of a 68hp, 1.4-litre engine. It pulls well from low engine speeds but also lacks an outright punch. Ride comfort is fine albeit a bit stiff at low speeds while the Cross’ light steering requires many turns, lock-to-lock.

Where the Etios Cross 1.2 petrol makes sense for buyers on a tight budget, the 1.4-litre diesel should be the engine of choice for high-mileage buyers. However, the Cross feels its best with the 1.5-litre petrol – which is our pick of the engines on offer. The 1.5 petrol is only available in fully-loaded V trim that gets ample safety equipment but sadly also lacks a touchscreen infotainment system.
