Trim the Bolero’s bumpers to get its length under 4m and replace the standard engine with a smaller 1.5-litre diesel unit – and what you’ll get is the Mahindra Bolero Power+. Its size and engine capacity qualify the Bolero Power+ as a ‘small car’ and hence a lower rate of taxation, making it significantly cheaper than the standard Bolero. There’s only one engine-gearbox option on offer.

Mahindra Bolero Power+ quick review

Unique bumpers aside, the Power+ looks no different to the regular Bolero. It’s much the same on the inside as well so you’ll have to contend with flawed ergonomics and cramped seating in the second and third rows. Quality is also sub-par for a vehicle of this size.
The Power+’s 71hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine surprises with its refinement and driveability; but it’s also quick to run out of breath on the highway. As it is the wayward high speed manners of the Bolero + make it a model best driven at a relaxed pace. Low-speed ride comfort is quite good.

Mahindra Bolero Power+ : our choice

The Mahindra Bolero Power+ is not cheap for what it is. Of the versions on offer, we’d take the mid-spec SLX that gets front and rear power windows, an audio system with Bluetooth and remote locking. Unfortunately, no version of the Bolero Power+ gets ABS or airbags.
