The Wrangler offers the undiluted Jeep experience. The shape is a throwback to the original Willys and form follows function; a removable roof and detachable doors are part of the kit. India gets the long-wheelbase, five-door version but space and comfort aren’t the Wrangler's highlights. The second row seats are upright and drivers will also have to make do with some ergonomic compromises. And for an SUV at this price, the cabin is rather basic too – both in look and features.
The Wrangler’s 284hp, 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine is smooth while the 200hp, 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel motor offers plenty of go but is noisy. The 5-speed gearbox feels indecisive, and you won’t take keenly to the Wrangler’s bouncy ride either. Judged as an off-roader, however, the Jeep Wrangler is incredible. It’ll take you deep into the wilderness (and get you back out) without breaking into a sweat. But how many Wrangler buyers will actually venture into the rough is another matter.
