Despite its age, the Volvo V40 remains quite eye-catching. The V40 Cross Country sits marginally higher and is also unique for its body cladding and SUV-inspired addenda. Both V40s feel solidly put together but their cabins look decidedly last-generation now. On the plus side, front-seat comfort is really good and there’s also enough legroom at the back for two occupants to sit comfortably. Drivers will find rear visibility an issue, though.
The Volvo V40s are powered by 150hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines that offer more-than-sufficient go available at all times. The V40s aren’t exciting in the corners but feel confident at all speeds. Do note: while the higher-riding V40 Cross Country does give allow you to take some liberties on broken roads, both V40s feel firm in their suspension set-up. The V40s large turning circle also means that they’re not the friendliest of city cars.
