The Fiat Punto was already a good base to build upon and the additional cladding, roof rails and scuff plates do their bit to make the Urban Cross more attractive still. The cabin has its nice elements but the odd driving position and inconsistent quality drag things down. Space and comfort are fine but newer hatchbacks are roomier.
The Urban Cross’ 93hp, 1.3 diesel engine delivers a strong punch in the mid-range but also feels sluggish at low speeds. The diesel engine is also noisy and, quite frankly, feels outdated. On the other hand, the 142hp, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine is a joy. It’s strong and loves to be revved. Sadly, the high-riding Urban Cross can’t put the petrol engine’s power down very cleanly. As with most Fiats, the model handles with grace and the ride is absorbent. The Urban Cross’ substantial ground clearance also comes handy on broken roads.
