If you like your cars flamboyant, the understated Audi A4 will not do it for you. It’s very business-like both on the outside and on the inside. The interior scores high for quality and is also user-friendly – the low-set dash, for instance, allows a great view out. Front seat comfort is good and while rear-seat ingress isn’t the most convenient, there’s a good deal of space in the back.
The A4’s 1.4-litre, 150hp petrol engine might seem underwhelming on paper but it is a quiet and competent unit that's capable of meeting day-to-day city requirements without issue. Where the engine feels out of its comfort zone is when you want a sudden burst of power. The 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel has more to give in this regard and makes the A4 feel light on its feet at all times. The engine runs quiet too and overall refinement levels are best in class. What also distinguishes the A4 is its ride quality. The suspension soaks up the worst of our roads with ease, and there’s none of that European car firmness in the setup.
