Second-gen Countryman crossover will launch in India at Auto Expo; petrol and diesel engines expected.

Mini is expected to have a fair share of models on display at the BMW Group stall at the Auto Expo 2018. The carmaker's line-up is expected to include the Cooper 3-Door, Cooper 5-Door, Convertible and the Clubman. However, the highlight of the Mini stall will be the new, second-generation Countryman which is scheduled to launch at the event.

The brand’s largest model, this crossover shares its platform, design and engine with the standard hatchback, albeit with SUV-esque styling. Compared to the previous-gen model, which was on sale in India earlier, the new Countryman is larger, with a 4,299mm length, 1,822mm width, 1,557mm height and a wheelbase measuring 2,670mm. The most practical Mini also comes with a spacious boot that is expandable to 1,390 litres with the rear seats folded.

Under the hood, expect the Countryman to get a 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines in varying states of tune. The crossover for international markets is sold with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel motors. A plug-in hybrid model has also been introduced in international markets, which is unlikely to make it to India anytime soon. An eight-speed automatic transmission is expected to be standard across the range. The previous-gen model was sold only in front-wheel-drive format. Details of if a four-wheel drive will be offered are sketchy.

Expect Mini to price the new Countryman at around Rs 40-45 lakh (ex-showroom). This would see it rival the likes of the Volvo V40 Cross Country in India.
