Mahindra has finally launched the petrol variant of the XUV500 in India. However, for now, the SUV is available solely with a six-speed automatic gearbox and comes in a single trim, as we had reported exclusively in August this year. This ‘G AT’ variant has been priced at Rs 15.49 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).

The petrol XUV500's AISIN-sourced six-speed automatic gearbox is mated to a 2.2-litre petrol engine that generates 140hp and 320Nm of torque; it also has a mode for manual gearshifts. This engine is based on the same block as the company's flagship mHawk diesel.  As mentioned, it uses a six-speed gearbox and power is transferred only to the front wheels. There is no option of an all-wheel-drive.

The XUV500 petrol comes equipped with features similar to its diesel counterpart, which includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, cruise control, push button start, and an eight-way adjustable driver seat. Safety features include ESP with rollover mitigation, dual airbags and ABS with EBD.

The introduction of a petrol engine in the XUV500 line-up will boost Mahindra's petrol range and enable the SUV to better take on rivals such as the popular Jeep Compass. Furthermore, it also marks an important step in the carmaker's larger plan to offer the option of a petrol variant across its entire portfolio from 2018.

Based on the response for the XUV500 petrol, Mahindra will evaluate the introduction of a petrol variant in the Scorpio line-up.

The carmaker is currently co-developing an all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine with SsangYong, which will be used in both automaker's models.
