The go-faster version of the production-spec SP Concept SUV will be powered by a 140hp, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol motor.

While the official launch of the production-spec Kia SP Concept SUV is scheduled for August this year, we have learnt that the Korean carmaker is also working on a sportier version of the model to be introduced possibly in 2020.

The sportier version of the Kia SP SUV will be differentiated with a body kit as well as a racier trim on the inside. But that won’t be all: the Kia SP SUV will also get a more powerful engine – a 140hp, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit. The engine will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddleshifters. Kia is also expected to tune this version’s suspension for a sportier drive.

Interestingly, the 140hp, 1.4-litre engine is also likely to find use on future Kia models in India. The premium Ceed hatchback under consideration for India could be one of the models that feature this engine.

The standard production SP SUV will be available with two engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 115hp, 1.5-litre diesel. Interestingly, these engines could be launched in BS-IV rather than BS-VI form. Manual and torque convertor automatic gearbox options will be on offer, paired to the 1.5-litre engines. Paddleshifters are also expected as standard kit on higher trims of the automatic models.

Pricing for the standard Kia SP SUV will be competitive, with Kia having confirmed a Rs 10-16 lakh price band for the model. Kia is also expected to offer the SP with loads of standard equipment

Do you think a sporty version of Kia’s SP SUV would sell well in India? Let us know in the comments below.
