Toyota is gearing up to launch its new mid-size sedan, the Yaris, in India, with a launch date confirmed for May 18, 2018. Bookings for the model, which was showcased for the first time in India at the 2018 Auto Expo, will officially commence on April 22. A few dealers in Delhi had begun taking bookings earlier for an amount of Rs 50,000.

Under the hood, the Yaris will be offered with a single petrol engine – a 108hp, four-cylinder naturally aspirated motor. No diesel engine is expected but a hybrid version may launch at a later date. The petrol engine can be had with either a six-speed manual transmission of a seven-step CVT automatic gearbox.

In order to better compete with rivals, expect Toyota to offer a number of segment-first features on the top-spec trim such as a powered driver’s seat, front parking sensors, a gesture control for the touchscreen infotainment system, a tyre pressure-monitoring system, 60:40 split rear seats with adjustable three-neck restraints, a and roof-mounted rear air-con with ambient lighting. In terms of safety kit, the top-of-the-line variant is expect to sport all-wheel disc brakes, seven airbags (including a driver's knee airbag), Hill-Start Assist, ABS, EBD and ESP.

Produced from Toyota’s Karnataka plant, the heavily localised Yaris is expected to be priced between Rs 8.4-13.5 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it will comfortably undercut one of its key rivals, the Honda City.
