While Land Rover had announced prices for its new Velar last year in December, the SUV-maker has finally launched the road-focused SUV in India. Prices range from Rs 78.83 lakh to Rs 1.37 crore (ex-showroom, India), and encompass 25 trims.

On offer are three engine options – a 179hp, 2.0-litre diesel, a 250hp, 2.0-litre petrol and a 300hp, 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor. The former two come in eight trims, while the latter comes in nine variants. The Velar range starts with the base trim, and includes the S, SE, HSE, R-Dynamic, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE and the R-Dynamic HSE variants. The 3.0-litre diesel also gets a top-spec First Edition trim.

The petrol engine on the Velar debuts JLR’s new Ingenium petrol mill, which is expected to replace the current 240hp, 2.0-litre petrol motor in the manufacturer’s engine line-up. In international markets, this motor is also available in a 300hp state of tune. JLR claims that the new engine deliver up to 25 percent more power while consuming 15 percent less fuel.

While Land Rover calls the Velar its most road-focused model, it still comes with the brand’s range of off-road technology. It is equipped with Hill Descent Control (HDC) as standard, the Terrain Response 2 system and an active rear-locking e-differential. A standard ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is paired with each engine and delivers power to all four wheels.

Sitting between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport in Land Rover’s India range, the Velar is a strict five-seater. The cabin comes kitted with a Touch Pro Duo infotainment system that uses two 10-inch touchscreens. The screens help to reduce the switchgear to an absolute minimum, while the lower part of the centre console, in front of the gear and Terrain Response selectors, has been turned into a screen as well.
