Following the Baleno Alpha AMT’s launch, the top-spec petrol and diesel Ignis models will also get the AMT gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki has announced that the top-spec Ignis hatchback will get the manufacturer’s automated manual transmission, termed Auto Gear Shift (AGS). Available now with the top-of-the-line Alpha variant as well, the Ignis Alpha (AGS) petrol is priced at Rs 7.01 lakh, while the Alpha (AGS) diesel carries a price tag of Rs 8.08 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The new five-speed AMT is mated to the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 83hp and 113Nm of peak torque, and the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel producing 75hp and 190Nm of torque. Besides the introduction of the new transmission, the hatchback is unchanged inside and out.

Aimed at millennials, the Ignis Alpha gets a raft of safety equipment including dual airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seats fitments. The hatchback rivals the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10, Tata Bolt and the Honda Brio.

Introducing the AMT on the Ignis Alpha variant, R S Kalsi, senior executive director (marketing and sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Our premium urban compact vehicle, the Ignis, has been created for millennials, a one of a kind brand in the Indian market. Automatic Gear Shift (AGS) on the Ignis, so far offered in the Delta and Zeta trims, has been widely appreciated by customers and accounts for 27 percent of Ignis sales. We are now offering AGS in the top Alpha trim as well. We expect this to strengthen brand Ignis and enhance the popularity of AGS amongst millennials.”
